There are various things you can do to improve your internet browsing, make pages load faster, and improve your overall experience. First off, make sure you do not have spyware or adware running, since most people that complain about slow computers are not aware that they are infested with spyware or adware programs which are consuming their computer resources. Now thats a whole different topic, but a very important starting point as it will not matter what you do if you have these types of things running.
Now, increasing your cache size can help. This is why browsers store your previously viewed webpages and graphics, since when you use your forward and back browser buttons it can just load from the cache. Your browser settings has various features for increasing cache sizes.
Turning off multimedia is another thing that can help. Your web browser will have options for this also, basically this means that sound and video will be turned off in your browser, but your graphics will still load. Since alot of news sites are playing audio and video, this can also be annoying so shutting it off will certainly help your browser speed.
Do not run other bandwidth programs in the background while you are browsing. If you have music streaming over the internet while you browse, or have P2P software running which is sharing videos, sounds, etc., these are consuming your bandwidth which will also slow down your browsing experience.
Using tabbed browsing can help alot. Browsers are now including multiple homepages, so if you normally view or read 7 to 10 pages daily, then make these 7 or 10 your homepage. This way when your browser opens the first time, these pages all load at once instead of you reading one page, then loading the next, then the next, etc., this is a very nice feature.

These are just a few tips, I hope to be adding more in the near future. But heck, with broadband becoming so mainstream, speed is not nearly as big an issue as it used to be with dialup! :)
