View List Detailed Description:
When you download songs using "ITunes", this uses their own song format instead of the MP3 format (you will see the aac extension on the ITunes songs). This is a good format, but most people prefer MP3 format as car stereos and other players all support MP3, but not AAC. Also, most want to keep all formats the same, rather then having some formats as AAC, some as MP3, and some as WMA, and then worrying about compatibility issues with each. I prefer MP3, and keep all my music in this format. If you purchase a song on ITunes, then you have it in AAC format, and you can convert it to MP3. You must first burn your music to a CD, to create an audio CD. Then, take the audio CD and rip your tracks back to MP3 format. You can also take an audio CD that you have purchased, and rip those to MP3. You can use the popular Winamp (its free and can be downloaded on the net) to rip CDs to MP3, or you can also use Windows media player. On Windows media player, just make sure you go to Tools-Options-Rip Music, and choose the MP3 format in the drop down box, otherwise it will default to WMA. Once you set the MP3 option, I would recommend sliding the scrollbar underneath it over to "192 kbps", as that is considered CD quality and is a great trade off in size vs. sound. I rip all my MP3s and 192 kbps, and have used Winamp and WMP both to do this and both work fine. ITunes is a free download also of course, and can easily be downloaded on the ITunes website. Winamp, Windows Media Player, and ITunes are all must have programs for those serious about your music! (And these are all free).
