The file status code 5 is returned when the file i-o result was that the file is not found at the time the cobol open statement was executed. Note that if the i-o mode was open or extend, the file was created, and if that was a vsam sequential file then the file was not created on the mainframe. This file return code is referring to mainframe cobol file status codes (Vsam return codes or cobol file status codes).
