View List Detailed Description:
Browser hijackers are basically programs that have altered or "taken over" your browser. These normally appear on your pc without your consent due to security holes, they may change your browser homepage and may alter the search engine your browser points too, others prevent you from visiting antivirus sites, and more. These are major nuissances to your browsing, and you may even see your favorites list get additional items automatically added, and toolbars can appear at the top of your browser trying to entice you to visit their sites more often, and are often related to porn and gambling related sites. First off, always check your add/remove section of the control panel to see what can be automatically uninstalled. Some of the "reasonable" browser hijackers at least give you an uninstall. If you find stuff there you do not want, run the uninstall to remove it from your pc. Next go through your computer startup menu to see what is running whenever you reboot. You can click start, then run, the type msconfig to view your startup tab, identifying the programs that run automatically on your computer, as this is where you will most often find the browser hijackers located. There are also browser help objects, called BHO's, that run in your browser, and these must also be checked and removed if found. There are located in your registry, which you can search for and edit. You can also use the BHO button on a program like Complete Cleanup, which will show these to you and give you an option to remove them (You can download that program here).
